On Friday 30 January, Sir John Lawes School hosted the annual Scholars' Education Trust Chess tournament, featuring twenty one students from five of the trust schools: Sir John Lawes, Robert Barclay Academy, Samuel Ryder Academy, Priory Academy and The Hemel Hempstead.

The SJL team consisted of Edward, Darya, Anthony and Dara, all of whom qualified for the semi-finals, resulting in an all-SJL semi final, eventually seeing Edward face Darya in the final. The match ended in a draw, and in a show of sportsmanship both students agreed to split the title, with SJL retaining the championship for another year.
