Sir John Lawes School

For over 80 years Sir John Lawes School has been delivering an outstanding education for the students in our care.  At the heart of everything we do is a desire to ensure that our students receive the highest standards of teaching and learning and a personalised curriculum that enables them to make outstanding progress, no matter what their starting point. However, we also know that education is about much more than just exam results and our statement ‘SJL Education for a changing world’ reflects our understanding that the world into which our students will emerge is an unpredictable one.  They will need much more than just good qualifications – and so we are also focused on helping them develop into well-rounded individuals in all aspects of their lives.

The shared values of the school community are summed up in the Sir John Lawes ACE:

  • Achievement
  • Care
  • Excellence

The ACE underpins everything that we do and provides a secure basis for all we strive to accomplish.

  • Achievement in academic, artistic, sporting, cultural and other forms with a focus on teaching and learning.
  • Care for students, staff and others beyond the school community.
  • Excellent standards, manners, honesty, personal integrity and uniform.

At SJL having the best possible staff underpins our success and this is reflected in the importance we have always placed on recruiting and developing the very highest-quality staff in all areas of the organisation. The staff at SJL are used to working hard and achieving excellent results, but they are also a very caring and supportive team where everyone is encouraged to share their ideas and really help us make a difference to our students’ future.

There is so much that marks out the Sir John Lawes community as a place in which each individual can receive the support and challenge they need to help them thrive.  We are all immensely proud of the work we do here so if you like what you hear and would like to learn more, do contact us and experience the Sir John Lawes ACE for yourself.

Philip Newbery - Headteacher, Sir John Lawes School
