Year 13 American Exchange

Posted on 07/11/2025

USA 418 Year 13 students from Sir John Lawes School had an incredible experience as part of our long-running exchange programme with Upper Dublin High School in Philadelphia. The trip was packed with cultural exploration, memorable moments, and new friendships — and proved to be just as enjoyable as ever.

Students stayed with host families, immersing themselves in American life and engaging with a wide range of cultural experiences. The first day was spent exploring the vibrant city of Philadelphia, including visits to Reading Terminal Market, Love Park, the iconic ‘Rocky Steps’, and the stunning Philadelphia Magic Gardens — where students had the unexpected opportunity to meet the artist himself, Isaiah Zagar.

Sunday brought a variety of adventures. Some students attended a Philadelphia Eagles NFL game, enjoying the traditional tailgate experience and mingling with fans, while others visited Hershey’s World, went shopping, carved pumpkins, or even saw a Broadway show.

On Monday, students travelled to Washington D.C. for a peaceful stroll around the capital. Although a government shutdown meant many museums and landmarks were closed, the group still enjoyed the day and took in the city's atmosphere.

Midweek, students fully embraced American school life — shadowing their exchange partners, attending lessons, playing sports, and spending time with their new friends. It was a fantastic opportunity to experience education from a different perspective.

Friday’s highlight was a trip to New York City, where students saw major sights for the first time, including Central Park, Summit One Viewing Gallery, the 9/11 Memorial, 5th Avenue and Times Square, and some even went celeb spotting! A boat tour around Manhattan offered stunning views of the skyline. That evening, students dressed up and celebrated Halloween — American-style, and on a whole new level!

The week concluded with a warm and heartfelt ‘potluck’ gathering on Saturday, where students, families, and staff came together to say goodbye and begin planning the return leg of the exchange in March.

A huge thank you to the Upper Dublin community for their generosity and hospitality — it was truly an unforgettable week!
