Buntingford First School Stays Cool During Heatwave
Posted on 29/06/2026
Buntingford First School makes the news, with its net zero building, as they were able to keep classrooms cool even as temperatures rose, allowing pupils to continue learning without disruption. While many schools closed due to the extreme heat, this school remained open.
The building has been specially designed to deal with changing weather conditions. Features such as energy-efficient insulation, carefully positioned classrooms and renewable energy systems help control indoor temperatures. Headteacher Vikki Johnston said the school’s environment meant children could carry on learning in cool, comfortable classrooms despite the heatwave.
The school, which opened in 2023, produces its own energy and has been built to reduce carbon emissions. It is designed to perform well in both hot and cold weather, making it more resilient for the future. This example shows how sustainable school buildings can not only protect the environment but also help avoid disruption to education during extreme weather.
