International Week at Harpenden Academy

Posted on 21/10/2021

This week has been a very exciting and busy week for children at Harpenden Academy. We have been on a whistle-stop tour of the world's continents and learned all about landmarks, culture, languages and current affairs within the countries.

On Monday, our first stop was Asia. We started with a brilliant assembly from Mrs Rokadia and Divyana (Y5) all about Pakistan and India and their cultures. Both shared with us the importance of food and family. We were also very impressed with Divyana's sari skills.  On Tuesday, we learned all about America. We learned about all the fascinating landmarks, both human and physical and the amount of countries that make up both North and South America. We even took part in some line dancing!

On Wednesday, we moved on to Africa. This day was particularly exciting as each class took part in an African Dance workshop. Each class learned all about the 'gumboot' dances that were created by the miners to help them feel positive when working in the gold mines. We then learned all about the colourful patterns used in clothing and created beautiful jewellery like the African tribes out of pasta.

On Thursday, we celebrated the continent of Europe. This included our morning focused on Spain and learning Spanish. Throughout the school we learned different greetings, colours, stories and numbers and in KS2 we learned about a variety of festivals that take place in Spain or countries where Spanish is spoken.

On Friday, as well as celebrating Harvest, we also learned all about Australia. We learned about the biodiversity in the Great Barrier Reef and how to look after it and learned about aboriginal stories. We even learned to sketch some of the wonderful wildlife found there.

Throughout the week, we had lots of parents visit to share their culture and language with their children's classes. The children have thoroughly enjoyed these first-hand accounts and we thank you for all your support!
