Trusts Student Sustainability Conference 2022

Posted on 17/06/2022

On Friday 10 June, 162 students from across the Scholars’ Education Trust met at Rothamsted Conference Centre for our first Student Climate and Environmental Sustainability Conference. SJL was represented by 60 of our most active environmentalists.  The day began with a detailed and inspirational keynote speech from Dr Amy Munro-Faure from Cambridge Zero. Students also enjoyed a number of workshops throughout the day including:

  • Reducing the Impact of Climate Change by Coemy and Daniel from SJL’s Climate Action Group
  • Tree of Trade-offs – agricultural priorities and knock-on effects and
  • A World Without Pollinators both led by Leanne Gunn, Public Engagement Manager, Rothamsted
  • Avoidable Food Waste and Biodiversity by Tanya Pascual and Jeremy Clarke from Sustainable Hertfordshire
  • Sugar Control and Active Travel – what does it all mean? by LaNita Hill and Alister Barclay from the University of Bedfordshire
  • Daily Decarbonisation – solving climate problems in daily life by Dr Amy Munro-Faure from Cambridge Zero
  • Amazing Trees by Isobel Mitchell from Sustainable St Albans
  • The Human Impact of Climate Change and
  • Sustainable Fashion/The Cotton Industry both led by John McLaverty from Oxfam

The day was rounded off by another extremely interesting talk from Rothamsted’s CEO, Nicole Sadd and a ‘Meet the Scientists’ Q&A session.  Dr Jemma Taylor, Research Associate for the Centre for Crop Health and Protection and Christopher Barton, CEO of Barton Blakely Technologies were asked many interesting and inspired questions by the students about their work.  We quickly realised we should have allowed more time for this session as the questions simply didn’t stop coming!

It was an exciting event and a wonderful opportunity for the students.  We send our grateful thanks to all those who made it possible.
