Partial solar eclipse over Dunstable

Posted on 18/06/2021

KS2 students at Priory Academy took great delight in being able to end their topic of light in science with a fantastic chance to see the partial eclipse live to understand how the moon is not a light source by seeing the moon partially block the sun.

This was an ‘annular’ eclipse, where the Moon’s shadow doesn’t quite reach Earth’s surface, from the UK we were treated to a partial solar eclipse.

Here is a recount from two of the children involved:

"We went out to look at the eclipse but you can't look directly at the sun because it will damage your eyes. First, we put a hole in a piece of paper and then put it in front of the sun with another piece of paper on the floor. We started to see a circle with a part missing and when you lifted it further away, it got bigger. This showed that the sun was being blocked by the moon." Phoenix and Finley Y5
